Background Information:

Jesus Cares Ministries (JCM) is a Zambian faith-based, non-governmental organization established in 1996 and committed to improving the livelihoods and resilience of vulnerable communities through integrated and sustainable development programmes. JCM works in partnership with government institutions, local authorities, faith-based organizations and communities to implement interventions in climate-resilient water, sanitation and hygiene (CR-WASH), sustainable agriculture, nutrition, disaster risk reduction, environmental stewardship, governance and economic empowerment. 

Under the LIFT Zambia Programme, JCM is implementing the Climate-Resilient Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (CR-WASH) component, which seeks to improve equitable access to safe and sustainable water services while strengthening community resilience to climate change. The programme recognizes that reliable water supply is fundamental to improving public health, education, food security, livelihoods and overall community well-being. 

Hydrogeological investigations undertaken at Namabanga Community confirmed that the existing borehole has adequate groundwater potential to support a mechanized solar-powered water supply system. Following detailed technical assessments and consultations with community members, the Ministry of Health, Mumbwa Town Council and other key stakeholders, JCM resolved to upgrade the existing water supply infrastructure into a modern, climate-resilient solar-powered piped water system. 

The upgraded system is intended to provide safe and reliable water to surrounding households, Namabanga Primary School and Namabanga Market. In addition, the project will facilitate productive water use through the installation of a dedicated pipeline to a community demonstration garden, thereby promoting climate-smart agriculture, household food security and income generation. 

The investment is expected to reduce the time and physical burden associated with water collection, particularly for women and girls, improve hygiene and sanitation practices, enhance resilience to climate variability, reduce dependence on fossil fuels through the use of renewable solar energy, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of rural water services.
