Project Safety Officer

Key Responsibilities

Implement, monitor, and maintain the Project Health and Safety Plan. Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and the Construction Regulations.

Conduct daily site safety inspections and audits. Identify hazards, conduct risk assessments, and implement appropriate control measures. Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses, and prepare detailed reports with corrective actions.

Conduct toolbox talks, safety inductions, and ongoing safety awareness training. Ensure all employees, subcontractors, and visitors comply with site safety requirements.

Monitor contractor compliance with approved Health and Safety Files. Coordinate emergency preparedness, drills, and first aid arrangements. Maintain statutory registers, legal appointments, permits, and safety documentation.

Liaise with the Client, Engineer, Department of Employment and Labour, and other regulatory authorities during inspections and audits. Monitor environmental, health, and safety compliance throughout the project. Promote a proactive safety culture and continuous improvement across the project.

Desired Experience & Qualifications

National Diploma or recognised qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.

Professional registration with Safety Body (SACPCMP or similar)

Valid First Aid Certificate (will be advantageous).

Valid Incident Investigation certificates.

Valid driver's licence.

Minimum 5 years' proven experience as a Safety Officer on major SMPP engineering and construction projects. Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Regulations, and applicable Zambian standards.

Demonstrated experience compiling, implementing, and maintaining project Health and Safety Files.

Experience working on similar infrastructure projects will be a distinct advantage.

Excellent communication, leadership, report writing, and organisational skills. Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.

Sober habits. Willingness to work away from home for the duration of the project.
